PORT OF ITAQUI (MA) EXPORTED 94% OF THE CORN PRODUCED IN MATOPIBA IN 2023, SAYS CONAB.

The Port of Itaqui in Maranhão emerged as the primary choice for farmers in the Matopiba region, handling around 94.29% of its exported corn and 26.3% of soybeans, totaling 5.55 million tons and 10.41 million tons, respectively, in 2023. Conab’s 2024 Agrologistics Yearbook underscores the region’s economic attractiveness due to lower freight costs compared to Southern ports. Bahia remains the top soybean exporter in Matopiba, but Maranhão is closing the gap. Arco Norte’s share in soybean and corn exports rose significantly from 2019 to 2023, reaching 33.8% and 42.5%, respectively. However, challenges persist, with a 3.4% decline in 2022 due to navigability issues caused by severe droughts.
