The Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor) and Dnit plan to invest BRL 4.8 billion in the waterway sector, focusing on developing and maintaining small port facilities (IP4). The preservation of the Newton Navarro Bridge in RN aims to increase safety. Other initiatives include the collapse of the Pedral do Lourenço and the dredging of the Tapajós, São Francisco, and Madeira rivers. The project proposes for the construction of locks at Sobradinho (BA), Jupiá, and Três Irmãos (SP), and new concessions for rivers such as the Paraguay River. The repair and growth of IP4 in the Amazon, as well as the installation of new facilities in northern ports, reveals the importance of river transportation. According to Minister Silvio Costa Filho, Lula intends to expand Brazil’s current 12,000 km of navigable waterways to 42,000 km in order to consolidate the canal modal as vitally crucial for both passengers and freight.
