G7 COUNTRIES REACH AGREEMENT TO ABANDON COAL BY 2035, BUT WITH CAVEATS

G7 Energy Ministers agreed to phase out coal in power generation by the early 2030s, aiming to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C. Yet, the statement allows flexibility for Germany and Japan, with over 25% of electricity from coal, to align with their net-zero trajectories. Germany targets closure by 2038, while Japan lacks a set date. This move aligns with COP28’s push to phase out coal, the most polluting fossil fuel. The group also pledged to reduce Russian energy revenues to support Ukraine but didn’t reach a consensus on sanctions regarding Russian liquefied natural gas.
