BRAZIL, AN AGRICULTURAL GIANT, COULD EXPAND CROPLAND BY 35%, SAY ANALYSTS.

Brazil, a key player in soybean, corn, and cotton production, could potentially expand its crop area by 35%, utilizing degraded pastureland. Research from a Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture agency and U.S. economists suggests the conversion of overgrazed pastures could add 70 million acres of cropland, boosting production. While actual expansion depends on various factors, Mato Grosso, Brazil’s largest agricultural state, could increase planted area by 25% through this conversion. Brazil’s utilization of second-crop corn could further enhance agricultural output. Despite vast land reserves, challenges such as rising input costs, limited infrastructure, and environmental preservation efforts pose long-term growth hurdles for Brazilian agriculture.
