Brazil’s biofuel sector could add BRL 403.2 billion to GDP by 2030, based on projected production of 64 billion liters of ethanol and biodiesel, according to an FGV study supported by Instituto Equilíbrio and Agni. The report estimates a BRL 62 economic return for every BRL 1 invested and projects sector expansion of up to 70%, with spillover effects across transport, manufacturing and agribusiness. Sugarcane output could rise 31.3%, while the industry may generate 225,500 new jobs, mainly in agriculture and processing. The study also projects a reduction of 27.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions through fossil fuel substitution, as sugarcane ethanol emits 70% to 90% less than gasoline. Increased biofuel production could also avoid deforestation of 480,000 hectares, particularly in the Cerrado and Amazon regions.
