THE ENERGY TRANSITION MAY HAVE REACHED BRAZILIAN REFINERIES

During the Abreu e Lima Refinery (Rnest) expansion inauguration in Pernambuco, Petrobras President Jean Paul Prates revealed plans for R5 diesel production, co-processed with vegetable oils, along with hydrogen and e-methanol. The move aligns with global efforts to transition from fossil fuels. Petrobras aims to invest between R$6 billion and R$8 billion in Rnest expansion, boosting processing capacity from 100,000 to 260,000 barrels per day. The company intends to focus on low-carbon hydrogen production, supporting Brazil’s neo-industrialization strategy. Globally, refineries are adopting energy-efficient practices, converting gases into fertilizers, and shifting to renewable sources. Petrobras and Acelen are investing in solar plants and considering biorefinery conversions to replace oil with biomass.
