PRIVATE TERMINALS HOLD 40% OF CONTAINER TRAFFIC IN 1Q23

In the third quarter of 2023, Private Use Terminals (TUPs) excelled in handling containers in Brazil, as indicated by DATaPort data derived from the ANTAQ report. Brazilian port throughput figures reveal that 40.1% of container traffic occurred in private terminals, totaling 1.2 million TEUs. Over the past five years, container movements in TUPs have increased by approximately nine percentage points, rising from 31.2% to 40.1%. According to the Association of Private Port Terminals (ATP), if the growth rate observed in 2023 is maintained, private port terminals will control most of the container market share within three years. “This hypothesis seems more likely when we look at the prospects for upcoming terminals already authorized to handle containers, such as Imetame, in Espírito Santo,” explained ATP President Murillo Barbosa.
