PETROBRAS AND RAIZEN SIGN AGREEMENT TO ANALYZE BIOMATHANE FEASIBILITY

Petrobras and Raízen have signed an agreement to jointly evaluate potential business involving the production, purchase, and sale of biomethane. The partnership also foresees studies for the development of logistics solutions for the delivery of the renewable fuel to enable its use in the Petrobras refineries. Biomethane will be produced by Raízen from residual organic material (vinasse and sugar filter cake), generated in the company’s agro-industrial operation. Petrobras said that biomethane has similar characteristics to natural gas and is part of a new generation of sustainable fuels, in line with Petrobras’ decarbonization strategy and the development of new business opportunities with lower carbon intensity. Biomethane has a high potential to reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90% by replacing fossil fuels. In April, Raízen announced the construction of a new biogas plant in Piracicaba (SP), the first to produce biomethane, with investments of around BRL 300 million.
