ETHANOL: CRUSHING SHOULD BE HIGH IN 2024, BUT PRICE SHOULD ATTRACT SUGAR PRODUCTION, EXPECTED TO RECORD

Different consultancies estimate that the Center-South region of Brazil can crush over 600 million tons of sugarcane in the 2024-25 season, which officially starts in April 2024, according to the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea). As a result, the mills must allocate a greater amount of sugarcane to produce sugar, based on the relative prices of sugar and ethanol. Cepea’s calculations show that at some points in 2023, sugar traded in the spot in the state of São Paulo paid 100% more than ethanol. The industry estimates that sugar production could reach 43 million tons in 2024-25.
