DROUGHT IMPACTED GRAIN SHIPMENT THROUGH NORTHERN PORTS IN 2023

Brazil’s soybeans and corn exports surged to 180.4 million tonnes in 2023, up by 26.7% from the previous year, with 36.8% leaving via the Northern Arc logistics network. Itaqui and Barcarena ports led, with 20.3 million and 19.1 million tonnes respectively. Thomé Guth of CONAB noted growth in exports from Mato Grosso and Matopiba, with Itaqui and Barcarena seeing significant increases. However, the Northern Arc’s total shipments declined due to navigability issues and increased production in the South. Santos remained Brazil’s largest outbound corridor, with 61.4 million tonnes shipped. Waterways grew in importance but faced challenges due to drought. Fertilizer imports dropped by 18.6% in 2023, with the Northern Arc playing a significant role.
