CORN HARVEST IN RIO GRANDE DO SUL IS EXPECTED TO EXCEED 6,4 MILLION TONS

Rio Grande do Sul’s 2025/26 corn harvest is 95%–98% complete, with production projected at 6.44 million tonnes from 831,500 hectares, according to IBGE data. Average yield is estimated at 7,757 kg/ha, or 129 bags per hectare, exceeding recent seasons and supporting a positive outlook for the crop. Industry representatives attributed the result to gains in technology adoption and farm management. Expansion of irrigated acreage remains a priority, with the Irriga+ RS program offering subsidies covering up to 20% of project costs and R$10 million currently available for new investments. Producers also raised concerns over electricity costs and water-use permits for irrigation projects, although recent regulatory changes have improved legal certainty. Separately, Santo Ângelo and Entre-Ijuís were selected to host the official opening of the 2026/27 corn harvest in January 2027.
