BRAZIL DEFENDS FREE TRADE TO BOOST GLOBAL FOOD SECURITY

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Marcos Montes, endorsed free trade to promote prosperity and fight against hunger and malnutrition worldwide. At the Global Food Security – Call to Action ministerial meeting, held in New York, the Brazilian minister said that it is vital to encourage a business environment that allows for an open flow of international trade for food and inputs. “In an interdependent and interconnected world, no country can remain isolated and prosper. Food safety, as a common goal, is everyone’s responsibility,” he said. The minister said that Brazil is aware of its responsibility as a reliable food supplier and capable of increasing its production without including new areas into production activity. However, the success of the Brazilian model depends on the integration of the various production chains. “In the globalized world, producing does not just mean planting and harvesting. It also includes guaranteeing the supply of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and fuels, combining all this with technology to provide foodstuffs across the planet”, he said.
