RENOVATION PROJECTS FOR THE SÃO FRANCISCO AND PARNAÍBA WATERWAYS TO EXPAND SUSTAINABLE LOGISTICS IN NORTHEASTERN BRAZIL

Brazil is advancing the revitalization of the São Francisco and Parnaíba waterways to expand inland freight capacity and reduce logistics costs. The New São Francisco Waterway will restore 1,371 km of commercial navigation between Minas Gerais and Bahia/Pernambuco, with projected throughput of up to 5 million tonnes in its first year. The corridor will connect with key rail and port assets, including FIOL, FCA, and the Port of Aratu. In the Northeast, the 1,344 km Parnaíba Waterway is expected to handle 4–5 million tonnes of grain annually within three years of operations, supporting MATOPIBA exports. A single convoy can replace up to 163 trucks, reducing freight costs, emissions, and road congestion while strengthening multimodal logistics integration.
