SOYBEAN HARVESTED IN RICE AREAS GREW 12% IN ONE YEAR

The soybean crop incorporated in irrigated rice cultivation has again recorded growth in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. In this 2021/2022 season, about 417,376 hectares were harvested, according to numbers from the Rio Grandense do Arroz Institute. It was a growth of 12.6% when compared to the soybean area of the previous harvest (370,594 hectares). The total soybean production in rice areas was 1,120,540 tons in Rio Grande do Sul. For the technical director of the institute, Flávia Tomita, this is a consolidation moment. “Soybean is already a consolidated crop in rotation with irrigated rice and has become a great option in the lowland system. It brings several chemical and physical benefits to the soil, in addition to the rotation of herbicide molecules to the system. This culture is also a facilitator for winter crops”, said Flávia Tomita. Harvested soybeans represent 43.6% of the area sown with rice in Rio Grande do Sul (957,185 hectares). In the last ten years, the area grew 94%.
