NEW BRAZIL’S AGRICULTURE MINISTER IS LOOKING FOR FERTILIZER SUPPLIERS

The Minister of Agriculture, Marcos Montes took over on Thursday (31/3) as has already started to search ways of guaranteeing the supply of fertilizers for Brazilian agriculture. Fertilizer shortages due to the war between Russia and Ukraine and sanctions on Russia and Belarus have led the government to strengthen relationships with other suppliers. Montes met with some representatives of the government of Iran even before taking office as to discuss an increase in the urea import quota. The government’s intention is to increase the volume of fertilizers from one million to three million tons. The minister plans to travel to Morocco, Egypt, and Jordan next month. Following the line of his predecessor, Marcos Montes endorsed fertilizers should not be targeted by sanctions. The new minister will continue what the government itself has been calling Fertilizer Diplomacy.
