BRAZIL’S 2022/23 SUGARCANE CROP STARTS WITH 17.6% MORE ETHANOL STOCKED IN ANNUAL COMPARISON

Center- South Brazil’s crop officially started on April 1, with ethanol stocks higher in relation to the same period of the previous year. According to figures released on April 14 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), the Center-South units stored 2.34 billion liters, an annual growth of 17.6%. A year ago, the sector recorded a drop of 3.6% in comparison with April 1, 2020 (1.99 billion liters). According to the Sugarcane Industry Union (Unica), the drop was due to a reduction in production and an increase in sales in March 2021. Stocks have currently increased, even with the falling sugarcane crush for weather conditions in the 2021/22 season. At the same time, the consumption of hydrous ethanol saw a loss of market share as consumers opted for gasoline. Anhydrous storage reached 1.04 billion liters on April 1, an increase of 24.9% when compared to last year (835.52 million liters). Hydrous ethanol output increased by 12.2% (1.29 billion liters last year).
