BRAZILIAN RICE PRODUCERS FIGHT TRADE BARRIERS AT WTO

The Brazilian Rice Industry Association (Abiarroz) will argue for reducing trade barriers in the trade of cereal commodities at the World Trade Organization (WTO). The group will participate on Thursday, Sep. 29, in the WTO Public Panel, in Geneva and defend that Brazil’s high-quality production is enough to help alleviate global hunger. “Abiarroz will emphasize that overcoming global food insecurity demands not only the supply of goods like rice but also greater market access, which entails lowering trade barriers, according to a note from the organization’s executive director, Andressa Silva.“We need to promote Brazilian rice and make sure that Brazil produces enough supplies for both domestic consumption and exportable surpluses,” she said, citing restrictions on Indian rice exports and high prices practiced in Thailand and Vietnam.
