BRAZIL: PARANÁ EXPECTED TO REACH RECORD WINTER CORN CROP

The winter corn harvest (safrinha) in Medianeira (Paraná) has already reached 70% of the sown area and is likely to produce by 600 thousand tons (10 million bags). “It’s a record”, said the director-president of the Lar Cooperative Irineo da Costa Rodrigues on Wednesday (13). “The initial estimate was 480 thousand tons (8 million bags), but the harvest was very good, despite some climatic problems, such as drought, frost, and hail, besides the damage caused by the corn leafhopper”, said Rodrigues. He also said that the lines for unloading grain at the cooperative’s units “were small” this season, given the increase in the available structure. “By the way, in the coming weeks we will miss these lines, because everything will have been harvested in the region by mid-July. We’ve never finished a corn harvest so soon.”
