RIO GRANDE DO SUL – PLANTING OF RICE ENDS, PRICES REMAIN FIRM

Rio Grande do Sul, the state that produces the majority of the world’s rice, stopped sowing for the 2022–2023 harvest. The intended planting area totals 862,498 hectares, according to the Rice Institute (Irga), which received this information from producers. The majority of the areas in each of the six Irga-coordinated regions have been planted. Brazil’s Supply Company (Conab) estimates that Rio Grande do Sul produces about 70% of the nation’s rice. Brazil produced 10.78 million tons of rice in the 2020–2021 harvest. Nearly 10 million tons of this total were grown in irrigation-reliant areas. Prices have been trending higher in the market over the past few weeks. A 50-kilogram bag was quoted on Wednesday (21), at R$ 90.47.
