Brazil’s increase in the mandatory ethanol blend in gasoline from E30 to E32 is expected to add around 1 billion litres to annual ethanol demand, with roughly 300 million litres supplied by corn ethanol, according to Unem. Even with stronger consumption, the sector still forecasts a surplus of 2-3 billion litres as production continues to expand, supported by lower sugar prices that are encouraging mills to divert more cane to ethanol. The industry expects the E32 mandate, together with a proposed move to E35, to support investment in new corn ethanol plants. The Energy Ministry has already launched technical discussions with automakers to assess the adoption of E35 from 2027.
