GLOBAL SUGAR MARKET SEES 1.1 MLN-TONNE DEFICIT IN 2026/27, RABOBANK SAYS

Rabobank’s preliminary outlook points to a global sugar deficit of 1.1 million tonnes in the 2026/27 season, excluding potential impacts from weather developments and geopolitical events. The bank said the projected supply gap offers limited relief for sugar prices and producer margins in the near term, while leaving room for significant revisions as the season unfolds. A possible strong El Niño event in the second half of the year remains a key risk, particularly for sugar output in India and Thailand, two major global suppliers. Rabobank also flagged persistently high diesel and fertilizer costs as a threat to crop management investments, which could weigh on yields and tighten global sugar supplies in subsequent harvests.
