Rio Grande do Sul’s sugarcane chain supports more than 5,000 agroindustry operations, with over 4,000 enrolled in the state’s Family Agroindustry Program, according to Emater/RS. The sector generates income for thousands of farming families through the production of brown sugar, molasses, rapadura, cachaça and livestock feed, while also expanding rural tourism activities. Labor availability and limited mechanization remain key constraints, particularly during the winter harvest season. To support productivity gains, Emater provides technical assistance and promotes technology demonstration units focused on improved sugarcane varieties and management practices. The industry continues to add value at farm level, strengthen local supply chains and support regional rural economies across the state.
