BRAZIL FERTILIZER SECTOR FLAGS SUPPLY RISKS, SEEKS FOREIGN MINISTRY SUPPORT

Brazil’s fertilizer industry has asked the Foreign Ministry to support efforts to secure fertilizer imports ahead of the August planting season. The move comes as the country relies on foreign suppliers for more than 90% of its fertilizer consumption, leaving growers exposed to disruptions in global trade flows. Supply constraints linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, China’s export restrictions and shipping challenges in the Strait of Hormuz have increased market uncertainty. Brazilian diplomatic missions have been tasked with engaging potential suppliers and facilitating export approvals. Industry representatives warn that tighter availability could raise production costs for soybeans, corn, wheat and cotton. The sector is also calling for longer-term policies to expand domestic fertilizer production and reduce import dependence.
