Copersucar, the global leader in sugar and ethanol trading, projects that all 42 of its affiliated mills will be producing biomethane within the next ten years, as it expects a huge market for the product, which is cheaper and far less polluting than fossil fuels, said Copersucar CEO Tomás Manzan. Copersucar presented at its terminal in Santos the BioRota logistics project, which already uses biomethane in part of the trucks contracted by the company to transport sugar to the port, Brazil’s main export hub. In this process, cost savings range from 20% to 30%, considering that 40% of the sugar transported to Santos still arrives by road, while the remainder is transported by rail. In addition to reducing costs, biomethane cuts greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to diesel, which was previously used by all trucks contracted by Copersucar.
