THE SUGAR MARKET WILL REGISTER A SMALL SURPLUS IN 2026/2027, SAYS CZARNIKOW

The global sugar market is expected to post a modest surplus of 1.4 million tons in the 2026/27 season, largely due to increased production in China, sugar broker, and supply chain services company Czarnikow reported on Tuesday, the 19th. However, the broker warned that the surplus figure could still disappear if the impending El Niño weather event causes even marginal production losses, or if Brazil, the world’s largest producer, diverts more sugarcane toward ethanol production instead of sugar. “It is now well known across the sugar market that consumption growth has been really weak over the last two years, but it has been a long time since we have had a production risk on the scale we face for 2026/27,” said Czarnikow’s head of analysis, Stephen Geldart.
