The Program to Stimulate Transport by Cabotage – BR do Mar was approved by the Brazilian Senate on Thursday (25). Cabotage is a safe, efficient and low-cost means of transport and represents only 11% of the country’s logistic alternatives. The new legislation is expected to promote an increase of 30%. The Ministry of Infrastructure said that the Cabotage bill intends to increase the volume of containers transported in a year from 1.2 million TEUs (in 2019) to 2 million TEUs (in 2022), in addition to expanding by 40% the capacity of the operating cabotage fleet over the next three years, excluding vessels which transport oil or oil products. “The BR do Mar program will allow for a greater balance in our transport matrix. The program will raise the offer and encourage competition from chartered vessels, as it reduces costs and bureaucracy”, said the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas.
