BRAZIL ANNOUNCES NEW CLIMATE TARGET WITH EMISSIONS CUTS OF BETWEEN 59% AND 67%

Brazil announced a new climate commitment, aiming to cut net greenhouse gas emissions by 59% to 67% by 2035, compared to 2025 levels, which equals reductions between 850 million and 1.05 billion tons of CO2 equivalent. This updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) aligns with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Announced on November 8th via a government note, it lacked a formal event and was initially marred by a metric error. Vice President Geraldo Alckmin will detail it at COP 29 in Baku. The Climate Plan, ready by 2025, will direct actions until 2035. Economic tools, like the Climate Fund, will aid implementation. Recent Amazon deforestation dropped by 30% to 6,288 km², the biggest decrease in 15 years, and Cerrado deforestation fell 25.7%, the first decline in five years.
