DESPITE DECLINES, 2024/25 HARVEST SHOULD NOT EXPERIENCE “SUDDEN DEATH”, SAYS DATAGRO

The 2024/25 sugarcane harvest in Brazil faced challenges from droughts and fires, impacting production despite early benefits from double-harvested cane. Although productivity started to drop in June, milling is expected to conclude by mid-November, earlier than last season. Datagro predicts an 11.7% decline in yield, down to 77.2 tons per hectare due to drought, stalk wilt syndrome, and other diseases affecting sugarcane quality. For 2025/26, delays in crop development and fires that damaged around 450,000 hectares, including straw burn-off in young fields, could hinder growth and intensify weed infestation. Mills might need to clear and replant affected areas, impacting future yields.
