PORT OF ITAQUI SEEKS EXPANSION TO KEEP UP WITH GROWING GRAIN PRODUCTION

The growth in grain production in the Matopiba region (Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia) has led to increased use of Northern Arc ports for exports, particularly the Port of Itaqui in Maranhão, now Brazil’s fourth-largest public port. In August 2024, Itaqui set a record by handling 3.7 million tonnes of cargo. The port has been undergoing modernization since 2012, and ongoing public and private investments total R$1.95 billion. These investments will boost grain storage capacity and throughput. Additionally, Itaqui aims to enhance sustainability by joining the Brazilian Ports Decarbonization Alliance.
