SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN POLLUTANTS AT PORT OF PARANAGUÁ

Scientists from the Federal University of Paraná found that the Port of Paranaguá saw significant reductions in pollutants from 2019 to 2020. The study, based on Camila Bufato’s doctoral thesis and supervised by Professor Ricardo Godoi, assessed the impact of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2020 sulfur content limits on ship fuel. The research revealed that vanadium levels dropped by 86%, nickel by 62.06%, and sulfur by 40%. Using “Harvard impactors” and x-ray fluorescence, the study highlighted improved air quality due to reduced sulfur content in ship fuel. Ongoing environmental monitoring at the port aligns with global sustainability trends, supported by the Government of Paraná’s Napi Climate Emergency project.
