PORT OF ITAJAÍ: WHEN WILL OPERATIONS RESUME?

The Brazilian Waterborne Transport Agency (Antaq) set a six-month deadline for Mada Araújo to meet the container movement requirement for the interim lease of the Port of Itajaí, ending on June 15. However, the acquisition of 70% of Mada Araújo by Seara Alimentos, a subsidiary of JBS, has shifted the port’s operations. The Municipality of Itajaí confirmed Seara Alimentos will manage the port in the second half of 2024. Operations are set to resume in three months, pending customs clearance by the Federal Revenue Service. Preparations include technical studies, environmental license adaptations, and facility renovations. Seara Alimentos’ majority control was finalized following Antaq’s approval. The interim contract, started in December 2023, will last two years, with a new 35-year management contract to be issued by the Federal Government.
