PRESIDENT LULA EXTENDS “THE LAW-AND-ORDER GUARANTEE” IN BRAZILIAN PORTS AND AIRPORTS FOR 30 MORE DAYS

President Lula has extended the Armed Forces’ deployment to guard ports and airports in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo for 30 more days until June 4, 2024. The 3,700 military personnel are combating organized crime by seizing illegal drugs and weapons and arresting criminals. Since November 2023, the operation has seized 172.3 tons of cocaine, 282 weapons, and arrested nearly 3,100 people. The overall cost of the operation is BRL 215.6 million, with the Armed Forces contributing BRL 182 million. The Justice and Defense Ministers approve the extension, citing the achievements made and the need to complete outstanding measures.
