INDIA BECOMES A KEY CUSTOMER FOR SÃO PAULO AGRIBUSINESS

India has become a key destination for São Paulo agribusiness exports, reaching 2 Mt and USD 906.5 million in 2025, according to IEA-APTA. The country ranks second in Asia, behind China, and fourth overall, up from 19th five years ago. Growth aligns with India’s 55% GDP expansion over the period, supporting higher import demand. The sugar and ethanol complex dominates shipments, accounting for 76.8% (USD 696 million), followed by soybean oil (USD 89 million) and plant-based chemicals (USD 33 million). Cotton exports rose 160% y/y to 15,000 tonnes, supported by quality gains and shifts in India’s sourcing. Trade flows benefit from stronger Brazil-India ties under BRICS and ongoing cooperation initiatives. Export concentration remains high, with limited value-added penetration. Further upside depends on diversification into pulp, citrus and proteins, pending tariff reductions.
