AMAZON REGION SET TO GAIN 13 NEW RAIL CORRIDORS TO BOOST EXPORTS

Railway expansion in the Amazon is accelerating, with four routes in concession or study, two under construction, and 13 authorized railways financed privately. Rondônia will benefit from the planned transoceanic railway linking the Atlantic to the Pacific through Acre and Peru, centered in Porto Velho, while Mato Grosso advances faster with state-run railways and highways connecting to national lines. This model is seen as key for Rondônia, whose agribusiness depends solely on costly road transport. Major projects include the East-West Corridor (Fico/Fiol), Ferrogrão (Sinop–Miritituba), and the North-South extension to Barcarena, listed under both the PPI and PAC, while the Transnordestina also progresses with studies for new stretches. According to a survey by the Institute for Energy and the Environment (IEMA), infrastructure expansion in roads, waterways, and railways highlights the scale of transformations underway in the Legal Amazon.
