Port activity in Brazil’s Northeast grew in early 2025, with over 33.5 million tonnes of cargo handled from January to May, driven by the ports of Itaqui (MA), Salvador (BA), and Natal (RN). Itaqui saw a 12.28% rebound due to strong performances in fertilizers, petroleum, and soybeans. Salvador maintained stability with a 1.52% increase, led by machinery, containers, and wheat. Natal showed the most dramatic recovery, rising 2.86% after a sharp decline in 2024, thanks to a 920.69% surge in fruit exports like melons and papayas. The growth reflects improved infrastructure, favorable weather, and federal investment efforts. The Northeast’s ports play a vital role in exporting grains, oil, minerals, and fruits, benefiting from a strategic location closer to Europe and North America.
