PARANÁ HAS TRADE SURPLUS WITH THE U.S., BUT CHINA REMAINS MAIN EXPORT DESTINATION

A DIEESE survey reveals that Paraná has a trade surplus of US$108.6 million with the U.S., though China remains its top trade partner, absorbing 28% of exports. The U.S. ranks second, with 6.8%. The study comes amid concerns over a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, set to begin August 1. In response, Brazil’s government formed a diplomatic task force led by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. In 2024, Paraná had an overall trade deficit of US$1.9 billion, but posted a surplus in U.S. trade. Exports to the U.S. rose 9.3% over 2023, driven by increases in sugar, seafood, paper, and electrical equipment. The Port of Paranaguá remains a key hub for U.S.-bound exports.
