PORT OF MACEIÓ SETS CARGO GROWTH RECORD AND PREPARES FOR AUTONOMOUS ADMINISTRATION

Port activity in Alagoas is expanding, with the Port of Maceió handling 1.3 million tonnes of cargo in the first four months of 2025—a 6.55% increase over 2024—mainly from sugar, salt, caustic soda, and fertilizers. This growth reinforces the approval of Bill 3034/24, which creates the Companhia Docas de Alagoas to manage the port independently, aiming for greater efficiency and autonomy. The new model, supported by BNDES, seeks to modernize infrastructure, improve responsiveness to market demands, and boost cargo and cruise activity—over 100,000 cruise passengers visited during the 2023/2024 season. Congressman Daniel Barbosa highlights that this change will enhance economic development, job creation, and Alagoas’ strategic position in trade and tourism.
