Brazil saw an increase in sugar exports via containers in 2023 after two years of decline because of the “containergeddon” movement. The rise in shipments was a result of the high production of sugar in the country and a drop in sea freight. In 2023, Brazil shipped 2.94 million tons of sugar via containers, 9.4% of the total amount shipped to other countries. Typically, domestic producers prefer to ship sugar in bulk via the ship’s hold, so container shipments make up a smaller share of the market, involving high value-added negotiations. However, the amount of sugar shipped via containers represented a year-on-year increase of 90.1%.
