SENATE PROJECT ENCOURAGES FAMILY FARMING IN THE PRODUCTION OF BIOFUELS

The Senate is considering a project presented by Senator Jader Barbalho, aiming to incentivize family farming’s participation in the biofuel production chain, specifically ethanol and biodiesel. The proposal, PL 5,927/2023, seeks to amend the National Biofuels Policy (RenovaBio) to include objectives encouraging and supporting family farming for biofuel raw material production. It also mandates a minimum percentage of biofuel commercialization for producers with the Social Biofuel Seal, which grants tax benefits and is awarded to biodiesel producers promoting family farmer inclusion. The project emphasizes providing incentives and technical assistance to farmers supplying raw materials. Barbalho argues that such measures would boost rural income, employment, and regional socioeconomic development, while also diversifying Brazil’s energy matrix.
