SAO PAULO: SUGARCANE PRODUCTION CAN REACH 283.4 MILLION TONS

São Paulo’s sugarcane output is likely to reach 283.4 million tons, down 5.06% from the previous crop, according to Brazil’s Supply Company (Conab). The drop is due to low precipitation volumes, which is a consequence of the La Niña phenomenon, and the reduction in the cultivation area. The priority is for sugar production: 155.3 million tons of sugarcane for sugar (54.8%) and 117.0 million tons for ethanol (41.3%). The volume and the attractive prices of sugar explain the greater amount of sugarcane for the product. Ethanol production is expected to total 10.8 billion liters, with 5.09 billion liters of anhydrous (-4.71%) and 5.71 billion liters of hydrous (-13).
