SANTOS PORT ENFORCES NEW REGULATIONS ON BALLAST WATER TO PROTECT MARINE ECOSYSTEMS

Starting August 21, all ships docking at the Port of Santos must present a certificate proving compliance with international ballast water disposal regulations. This measure, enforced by the Santos Port Authority (APS), aims to prevent bioinvasion, which poses significant threats to marine life and local economies. APS has informed the Maritime Shipping Agencies Union (Sindamar) of this new rule, prompting shipowners to submit their certificates. The APS will utilize AI, GPS, and other technologies for remote monitoring to ensure compliance. Ballast water, essential for ship stability, can introduce harmful species and pathogens when discharged improperly. The Port of Santos, Latin America’s largest port, emphasizes sustainable practices, requiring ships to treat ballast water before discharge or release it in designated oceanic areas. APS’s enhanced tracking system will ensure stricter enforcement of these environmental regulations.
