In April, Porto Itapoá launched a safety campaign in an effort to encourage and celebrate ships that are making improvements in their safety conditions. The initiative is part of the MAIS Program (Minhas Ações Inspiram Segurança), which awarded the first medal to the Brazilian ship “Bartolomeu Dias”. The Port Operations Manager, Thiago Santos, explained that the campaign is based on the rules defined in Regulatory Norm number 29 (NR 29), which defines a set of safety recommendations for port operations. “We have intensified inspections on vessels to ensure a safer environment for both, seafarers and employees”, he said. For the ship’s commander, Luiz Cláudio Marinho, the medal is an important incentive to the work. “It is a very valid initiative, which encourages and recognizes all our efforts to boost safety”, he said. Marinho recalled that he has been a vessel commander since 1994 and he has never seen a campaign totally focused on safety like this. An important element of the campaign is the letter of recommendation, which is sent to the shipowner, highlighting the good practices adopted by the crew.
