PORT OF PARANAGUÁ ANTICIPATES RECORD GRAIN SHIPMENTS IN 2023

The Port of Paranaguá, in the state of Paraná, Brazil, expects to ship 5.05 million tons of grains by the end of the year. This volume represents a 10% increase over 2022. However, in order to reach this goal, producers need to sell more. According to the Organization of Cooperatives of Paraná (Ocepar), 25% of the state’s soybean production is still in storage. This is because prices are below what producers expected. The storage capacity of Paraná is 32 million tons, which means that if last year’s crop were harvested all at once, only 67% would be protected in the state’s storage facilities. With part of the production in storage, the concern is for the future crop. If the current crop is not shipped out quickly, there could be difficulties storing the next year’s crop. The October rains caused damage in much of Paraná, but they have not yet had a major impact on the 2023/24 crop. It is expected that the crop will be full, exceeding 40 million tons of grains.
