PORT OF ITAQUI LEADS CARGO GROWTH AMONG NORTHEASTERN PORTS IN 2025

The Port of Itaqui achieved the highest cargo-handling growth among northeastern Brazilian ports between January and August 2025, with an 8.45% increase over last year. This helped regional ports reach a record 213.9 million tonnes moved since 2021. Itaqui alone handled 24.9 million tonnes, mainly grains and fuel. Soybeans drove the surge, up nearly 17% to 16.1 million tonnes, with Itaqui responsible for 12.5 million. The port’s strong performance reflects strategic investments in modernization and infrastructure, according to president Oquerlina Costa. Its integrated logistics—rail access via the North-South, Carajás, and Transnordestina railways—make Itaqui a key export hub for Maranhão and neighboring states. To sustain growth, construction of Berth 98 is underway, expected to add 8 million tonnes in capacity and expand access for producers, reinforcing Itaqui’s role as a competitive and inclusive export gateway.
