MORE PLANTS OPERATE IN EARLY 2024/25 AFTER RECORD SUGAR AND ETHANOL IN 2023/24.

The Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Union (Unica) forecasts a higher number of operational sugar and ethanol plants in April compared to last year, marking the start of the processing season in Brazil’s main producing region, the Center-South. Unica estimates that 131 production units will resume activities in the first half of April, with an additional 25 restarting from the 15th, totaling 205 plants by mid-month and 230 by the end. This contrasts with 167 units in operation during the same period in 2023. Climatic conditions may affect the pace of mill returns. Despite a projected decline in the 2024/25 harvest, sugarcane crushing in the region grew by 6.5% in late March, with ethanol production increasing by 37.4%.
