LAW SANCTIONED BY THE PRESIDENT OF BRAZIL REGULATES PILOTAGE SERVICES IN BRAZILIAN PORTS

The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, sanctioned Law 14.813/24, regulating pilotage services in Brazilian ports, without vetoes. The practice of pilotage aims to assist the ship’s captain in dangerous maneuvers to prevent accidents. The Navy remains responsible for economic regulation, with the authority to establish service fees through a temporary commission, valid for up to 12 months. The commission, advisory and parity-based, will include representatives from the maritime authority, pilotage service providers, shipowners, and the National Waterway Transportation Agency. The legislation also allows for an exemption certificate from pilotage for Brazilian commanders of national ships.
