INLAND TRANSPORTATION BREAKS RECORD IN THIRD QUARTER OF 2023

Inland transportation in Brazil broke a historical record in the third quarter of 2023, with the movement of 33.79 million tons. The growth was 6.1% compared to the same period of 2022 and 7.6% compared to 2019. The record was driven by the transportation of soybeans, containers, and iron ore. Soybeans were the main commodity transported, with 4.1 million tons, followed by containers (2.6 million tons) and iron ore (1.7 million tons). The Amazon region was the main driver of growth, with a movement of 20.27 million tons, representing more than half of the total transported. The drought in the Amazon had a limited impact on navigation on some rivers in the region, but it did not affect the transportation of soybeans on the Madeira River. The Brazilian Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ) plans to hold the auction for the first river transport concession, that of the Madeira River, in 2024.
