The expansion of the Port of Natal, in the capital of Rio Grande do Norte, has been budgeted at R$1.2 billion. The study, commissioned by the National Confederation of Transportation (CNT), predicts that the Porto Potengi, on the left bank of the Rio Potengi, could reach 110 hectares and have the capacity to store 130 to 200 thousand containers per year. The focus of the expansion would be on fruits, mining, industrial products, and fish. The wheat part would be allocated to the existing structure of the Port of Natal. The study predicts that the port will be built by 2029, with the first three years for the preparation of the EIA-RIMA and the other years for the issuance of environmental licenses. According to the study, the maritime access to the Porto Potengi will need to be deepened to 12 meters of depth, which will allow the entry of larger ships.
