DECARBONIZATION BOOSTS PROJECTS FOR BIOGAS AND BIOMETHANE PRODUCTION

Far from being new, the production of biogas and biomethane in the sugar-energy sector is beginning to take a new direction. So far, it has been restricted to experimental projects such as the one by Coopcan in Paraná in 2012. The decarbonization agenda, which gained strength with the environmental agenda, sets goals to be met by 2030 by governments, and companies. Pioneer plants in large scale production such as Raízen, which projects 39 production modules to be installed until 2030 (currently it has 2, Cocal and Adecoagro), see great possibilities for expansion. These projects have recently been supported by the Federal Government, through the ‘Zero Methane Program’, which provides for public funding to new industrial plants. According to the manager of Biogas Operations at Raízen, Débora Cardoso Vieira, by 2030/31 the company aims to operate 39 biogas modules to meet the growing market demand for solutions that contribute to the decarbonization. Among these demands are gas-powered trucks, as well as exploring strategic geographic location for the connection with natural gas distributors’ pipelines and the final customer.
