BRAZIL’S NORTHERN ARCH EXPORTS THE SAME VOLUME AS THE PORT OF SANTOS

Eight ports in the north region (including the northeastern state of Bahia) shipped 38.9 million tons of grain in 2021. With structural improvements and new transport and logistics strategies, the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of BraziL (CAN) projects that numbers tend to grow in the coming years. The Northern Arch involves eight port complexes, from Porto Velho (RO), Miritituba, Santarém and Barbacena (in Pará), Itacoatiara and Manaus (in Amazonas), Itaqui (Maranhão), in addition to Cotegibe (in Bahia). It already exports the same volume of grains when compared to the traditional Port of Santos (SP). There were 38.9 million tons in 2021, and 38.8 million through the port of São Paulo, in the same period. According to CAN, between 2009 and 2021, the agricultural production jump in the Northern Arch was quite significant: from 56 million to 141.9 million tons of grain. “Some 69% of agricultural exports go through ports in the South and Southeast regions. However, the Northern Arch movement last year was equivalent to that of Santos”, said Elisangela Lopes, technical advisor for logistics and infrastructure at CNA.
